The West Jaintia Hills also popularly known as Jowai is a district located in the state of Meghalaya. The town of Jowai acts as the district’s capital. The district was once part of the grand Jaintia Kingdom. The present inhabitants of the District are the Pnar, the War, the Bhoi (Karbis), the Lalungs, the Hadem of Saitsama area, the Beates/Biates of the Saipung Sub Division and the Hmars of Khaddum village.

The district is part of the Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion. owai is the host of all the heads of important governmental offices and establishments, educational institutions, hospitals and banking institutions. Although the mainstay of the district is agriculture, however, due to the abundance of Limestone, plenty of Cement factories have been set up in the district.

Monolith in Nartiang, Thadlaskein Lake, Megalithic Remnants in Nartiang, Syndai, Syntu Ksiar and Krangsuri Falls are some of the major centers of interest in the district.
